Laura Mars Gallery Berlin 2026 Are those little retro-style lamps gathered on the podium for the award ceremony? For the series Lakope, Joshua Zielinski dismantled and reassembled discarded sports trophies. The small marble bases remain intact, but the trophies themselves, with their Talmi-aesthetic, are sometimes reminiscent of cake pans, sometimes of shimmering parasols mushrooms, one of which is trying to hold onto its hat with thin little arms. The trapezoidal, gentle yellow plinth raises the objects to the viewer’s eye level and unites them into a sculpturalwhole. The sculpture Twin is also the result of a transformation: originally, the sandstone was intended to serve as a plinth in a different context, but a sculpture was never installed on it. However, traces of its previous intended use (drill holes) and storage (discoloration and broken edges) have been deliberately preserved. Zielinski carved a stele from the existing material, whose shape corresponds to a mirrored profile of a “Berlin”-type baseboard. This historicizing form from the Wilhelminian era, a kind of “room plinth,” is a functional design element found in the old buildings of many major German cities (cf. Hamburg/Frankfurt profile). In the larger exhibition room, two museum vitrines dominate the scene. These vitrines, which usually protect valuable objects from dust and other elements, here instead house two collections of dust. Man Ray’s famous photographic work Élevage de poussière (Dust Breeding) comes to mind—an enigmatic image showing the dust &nbsp;that had accumulated over months on Duchamp’s Le Grand Verre. Yet Zielinski’s display cases contain no household dust, but rather fine stone dust—they protect visitors from the latent danger posed by it. The fleeting dust is contained within the display cases; the amorphous form of the material makes the ensemble appear like a comparative mineralogical experiment. Are we seeing here the remains of a stone, a sculpture, or could a new form emerge from this? Zielinski’s type metal casts Löschblätter raise similar questions: made from the individual melted letters from letterpress, he has produced seven casts of different blotting paper pages. A somewhat absurd process, the pastel-colored, thin paper sheets—which otherwise absorb excess ink in school notebooks—here encounter the weighty, now obsolete former carriers of potential texts. Fine veins, grainy surfaces, or sharp edges lend each cast a unique presence. Finally, there is Der Unstete, a sculpture made of gneiss. One senses a figure in its form—or perhaps just the shadow of a figure? The layered structure of the material reflects its nature as a metamorphic rock, which likely has wandered from Scandinavia to Germany as an erratic boulder during the last Ice Age. This sculpture, with its almost classical appearance, thus relates with the other works in the exhibition; they are linked by their transformative nature and the ability to continually create new identities from the same material. Marble, Steel, Diabas, Limestone and Bronze The Brühler Kunstverein is located in a former metal workshop of the Marienhospital in Brühl Germany. This unusual situation of a hospital having a metal workshop was the starting point for the development of new site-referential works. In preparation for the exhibition, research was conducted on site by observing the contemporary use of metal in both the hospital and in the local public space. In the exhibition, sculptures made of marble, a material used throughout art history to depict human bodies, are held by metal structures. Additionally, an anti-slip floor plate (Tränenblech in German— literally translated as teardrop plate), normally used to provide safe footing in entranceways, was chosen as a raw material and the individual "tears" were ground down. The dimensions of the metal structures and the anti-slip plate have specifically been produced to conform to standardized specifications for hospitals and wheelchair-accessible entrances. The shape of the metal structures refer to handrails found in both the hospital setting and in urban furniture located throughout the city and also near to the Kunstverein. Alongside these new works earlier bronze sculptures, created from wedges from various museums are incorporated in the exhibition, creating a bridge to previous works. Poster 68cm x 47cm x 12cm &amp; 104cm x 43cm Invited by the project space BETON Berlin in cooperation with the Project Space Festival Berlin 2023, this work engages with an area of public space in Berlin-Friedrichshain and thematize its latent emptiness.The temporary intervention for this site is directly linked to a kind of palpable and imposing absence and reflects on the spatial, social and historical background of the space and the connections to current urban development in Berlin. The site serves not only as a location and basis for his intervention, but is also a discursive space between past, present and future. Formerly named Leninplatz, a colossal 19-meter tall monument of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin made of red Ukrainian granite once stood in the center and defined the space of what today is called United Nations Square in Berlin Germany. After the reunification of Germany and in the course of the debates over Lenin monuments in public space, the sculpture was removed from the list of city monuments, dismantled and buried in the forest on the outskirts of Berlin in 1992. Sometime between 1992 and 1996 unidentified individuals broke off parts of the left ear of “Lenin“ and subsequently the location was once again fenced off. Years later in 2009 the decision was made to excavate the head of the Lenin Monument and since 2016 it is on display in the permanent exhibition “Unveiled: Berlin and its Monuments“ in the Citadel Spandau Berlin. In 1992 Leninplatz was renamed to Platz der Vereinte Nationen (Square of the United Nations). In 1994 the square received its present design. In the place of the Lenin monument there is a fountain. It was designed by an employee of the Parks Department. On one side of the path lies the fountain made of heavy boulders from all corners of the world. The five largest stones symbolize the five inhabited continents. The stones are marked with their place of origin and weight. The heaviest one weighs 24 tons. The fountain built into the stones is defective. Up to now, there is no information about the square or its history. The sculptural intervention reflects on the history of the square, the monument that once stood there and the latent emptiness that is felt at this location. The account of the missing piece of “’Lenin’s” left ear serves as the starting point for the intervention. The work consists of a granite sculpture placed on the former location of the monument and a poster pasted to a sign explaining the historical facts of the square. In the south-east corner of the property there was an ordinate gate which opened up to the estate‘s hunting revier. On top of this gate sat two elk sculptures made of cast zinc and adorned the bases of gateposts. During the Second World War, these sculptures were damaged and eventually taken down.&nbsp; Since the end of the war the bases of gateposts lay empty. Waidmannsdank takes the history of the hunting excursions at Liebenberg and the elk sculptures at the former gate as an starting point to reactivate the stone bases. The work consists of two zinc cast sculptures in the form of elk pelts draped over bases of the field stone gateposts. The title “Waidmannsdank” is German and refers to a thankful reply of a hunter to someone who wished wished them “Waidmannsheil” (a greeting among hunters and something akin to “good hunting”). Idea for the exhibition was to engage with the exhibition space and create new works dealing with the specific conditions of this place and its local context. Situated on the ground floor of a Gemeindebau, Fabrikraum is located on Johnstraße in Vienna’s 15th district. The busy two lane street runs from the Schmelz—a former military exercise and parade ground—straight through the multicultural district of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus and directly to the baroque palace Schloß Schönbrunn. In preparation for the exhibition, Zielinski considered the history of the neighborhood where Fabrikraum is located and reflected on how a social-economic position is mirrored in the architecture. In this respect, the various forms of balcony railings on Johnstraße and throughout the neighborhood caught his attention. What, if anything, can the form of a balcony tell about a building, a neighborhood, a resident? How is taste, class, wealth etc. manifested in its form? “Gelände” consists of objects resembling balcony railings, some referring specifically models found on Johnstraße. In doing so Zielinski reflects on the history of the district as part of a military parade route and questions the representative function of form. D E R N Glacial erratic 130cm x 80cm x 90cm 2021 The work A B U N D Z U W A N D E R N is made from a glacial erratic found in the northern German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Glacial erratic are stones and boulders which have been transported by glaciers during the ice age. They are among the first materials that were used to mark places and delineate boundaries. Originating from Scandinavia, glacial erratic found in Northern Europe were transported south through glacial movement. Consisting mostly of hard stone such as granite and quartzite, they are geologically foreign to the local bedrock. Not only because of their size and weight, but also because of their visual difference, erratic boulders were particularly suitable as border markers. Borders and ideas about what is foreign, have changed throughout the course of history. The work consists of the letters A B U N D Z U W A N D E R N chiseled into the surface around the boulder. It is a play on words in German, on the phrase “ab und zu wandern”- “to go for a walk now and then” - and the words “abwandern”- “to emigrate from” and “zuwandern" - “to immigrate to”. It can be interpreted as a leaving of one's homeland, or as traveling to new home, as a call for an occasional walk in the landscape or as a change of residence or occupation. It alludes to the shifting of boundaries as well as the geological history and movement of the boulder. A country’s border is a political barrier which requires permission to enter and reside. Who may enter and who is denied depends on an individual’s identity. Today, such permission is granted in the form of a visa. A specific typography is used to reaffirm and record this acceptance. The modern sans-serif typography used in A B U N D Z U W A N D E R N is the same type used in my residence permit, referencing how the constructs of borders and identity are recorded through written language. Just as the erratic boulder is contradictorily part of Scandinavia and yet of course part of Germany, indeed older than the state of Germany, this work considers the ambiguous construct of borders and identity. However, if you look at the geology of stone, it is far from the idea of eternity. The history of stones consists of the formation and decay of physical and chemical bonds. Solidifying, metamophizing, and sedimenting - viewed from a distance, the cycle of stone proves to be a process of constant change. The work Perpetuate - Undulate deals with the relationship between form, process and artistic action. During the carving process, the stone is often rotated and turned over so that only a part of the entire stone can be worked on. With each turn, a new surface becomes visible which can be reshaped. The resulting form from this process refers to this continuous movement and to the exploration of the idea of a permanent composition.This action is further referenced in the exhibition of the works. There is no predetermined way in which they are to be displayed, nor is there a set base. Limited to the duration of the exhibition, each time&nbsp;the works are shown differently and placed in different contexts. Each presentation offers different spatial conditions, from which new relationships emerge.
