Spolia
2018
Carrara Marble
60cm x 50cm x 25cm

Marble is metamorphosed limestone consisting of the layers of calcium from prehistoric lifeforms. Spolia is made from a piece of marble. When the stone was first acquired there were traces of sawing splitting and drilling on it. It was the remaining excess of other works. These traces which the stone bore on its surface and the knowledge of the material's origin serve as the point of departure for the work.

Reflecting the transient nature of the material, the display of Spolia resists a permanence. There is no predetermined way that it is supposed to be displayed or “correct“ orientation. Each way it is shown produces a unique set of relationships and makes the work susceptible to the viewers position, as well as to the light and spacial conditions.
